Alice Paul (1885–1977) – The Radical Suffrage Patriot
"I never doubted that equal rights was the right direction."
Alice Paul was a fearless leader of the women’s suffrage movement, known for her fearless protest tactics and relentless fight for the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote in 1920. She co-founded the National Woman’s Party (NWP) and organized massive protests, including the first picket of the White House in U.S. history. Arrested multiple times, she endured brutal prison conditions and hunger strikes, forcing authorities to recognize the movement’s demands.
Even after securing women’s voting rights, Paul didn’t stop—she drafted the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) to guarantee full legal equality for women, a fight that continues today. Her unwavering defiance makes her an Undeniably American revolutionary in the pursuit of justice.
Her memory lives on in the continued legacy of the Alice Paul Institute:
